Two weeks into the invasion everything is going wrong for the Kril Legions. They were making grudgedly slow progress.
“What is that?” Hortim was eyeing her tactical 3-D panel from her station in the Burseeosil. There was a green-dotted mass of movement roiling like an ocean with six foot swells. She did not recognize the signals. The Dinarchy and the Kril did not display in green. She immediately summoned Jaguar.
A couple of Obs passed as they watched the green movement. “I believe you should be aware of this phenomenon.” Jaguar was speaking through her Stel to BalamEk.
BalamEk answered. “My commanders have acquired the curious projections. Meli’s science teams have also attained the information.”
The wall to wall projections and the entire command area was abuzz with verbal readouts, interspaced with StelaBalaam projections, analysis, and crackling voice crosschecking. Minutes slid by while the entire command module was focused and speaking to each other about data and analyzing readouts. Burseeosil germs were scurrying about transferring messages and cleaning debris, as was their nature, piling up in the module. They were unaffected by the anxiety.
Hortim’s eyes were fixed on her projection. “This mass is located on a plain between KrutChan’s half-Malkril and ZacNaab’s Malkril.”
Jaguar agreed with Hortim’s assessment. “The phenomenon appears to be a lava-type flow. Any phenomenon is likely on an exoplanet like this. It is strange…very strange.”
She was looking at Hortim. “And what is your opinion?” Jaguar asked.
“My question is whether the incident threatens our forces on the ground.”
“Could it be a natural process?” BalamEk asked her scientific crew. “As Hortim speaks, we must be concerned for our Legions.”
Jaguar’s suspicious nature was on full throttle. “I wonder if the Dinarchy are behind this event.”
“I agree.” Hortim said. “Though I must admit I’ve never gotten those kinds of readings, even when I’ve piloted my TunToob over the battlefield, in my THEN.”
An extremely excited ZacNaab was shouting through his Stel. “They are attacking us! Thousands upon thousands of Dinarchy creatures are massing in movement towards our positions! We need assistance! Where are our Toobs?”
BalamEk’s voice cut in, in response to ZacNaab. “I have sent urgent missives to our affected Legions on the ground to report what they are seeing.” She spoke with calm.
“Do you want my Toobs to investigate? Hortim said.
“No…I have dispatched reconnaissance Toobs to the area. They should be over the affected zone within Obets.”
KrutChan’s voice came over their Stels. “My Kril are reporting that the mass is made up of single furry indigenous animals in some kind of frenzy. Their intense growling can be felt in our feet, rumbling and low-toned. We are attempting to get further information. So far, they are moving on a lateral course to us; making no attempt to close with my lines.”
AinAcbal’s Viking report added. “My Kril are not juveniles. They are telling me that, along our positions, it is quiet. They are not seeing any massed Dinarchy. In the far distance it looks like wind blowing through barley fields. There is no perceived threat of any kind.”
“I want immediate access to what you gain in intelligence, BalamEk.” Sounding irritated, KrutEk added. “ZacNaab, contain your emotions! We need intelligence. We do not need exuberant children’s fables; not everything on this planet is Dinarchy.”
Meli’s second in command added. “KrutEk may be correct.” She said to BalamEk. “However our past invasion data experiences indicate some of the indigenous creatures on a planet are as dangerous, in some circumstances, as the Dinarchy.”
BalamEk asked. “You are stating KrutEk is incorrect in his assessment?”
Meli answered the query. “My aide is simply pointing out KrutEk may be overly optimistic in his assessment of ZacNaab. If creatures are approaching his lines, ZacNaab has a unique perspective and is prudent to be concerned.”
Hortim was speaking to Jaguar. “That possible threat seems more like waves crashing on a shore. KrutChan says they are individuals. I wonder...”
“KrutChan’s on site perspective is better than ours.” BalamEk said. “In your earth measurements, we see the entire battle line many kilometers in length, while his half-Malkril vision sees the terrain in meters. I must trust his uninflammatory reports.”
“What about ZacNaab’s concerns?” Meli asked. “Are we to ignore him?”
